Top 10 Reasons to Exercise

by Dr. Joseph Bosco, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery - Albert Einstein College of Medicine

Losing weight and looking better are two great reasons for exercising, but there are many more. Here are a few of the most important ones:

  1. Strengthen your heart muscle. You will live longer.
  2. Release the endorphins in your brain. It's harder to feel depressed when exercising.
  3. Relieve physical and mental stress.
  4. Increase your aerobic stamina so activities like climbing stairs and shoveling snow become easier.
  5. Sleep better. Exercise relieves the excess tension that can keep you awake.
  6. Strengthen your muscles in your arms and legs to avoid strain.
  7. Raise your basal metabolism level. You can eat more without weight gain.
  8. Lower the bad cholesterol levels and increase the good ones in the blood stream.
  9. Help your heart beat more efficiently to combat high blood pressure.
  10. Help prevent osteoporosis by retaining calcium reserves in your bones.

Meditation

To meditate is to honor the soul. Meditation is a way of spending time with the soul, allowing it to share its knowledge and to communicate its needs. There are an increasing number of studies which indicate meditation can help relieve stress.

Words of Wisdom

"If the eyes had no tears
the soul would have no rainbow"
— a native American proverb

"Keep your heart sweet.
It will show on your face,
it will sound in your words,
it will shine in all your actions"
— Swami Chidvilasananda

"One of the most magical things that happens
when you apply yourself to spiritual practices
is that you experience great love
surging within yourself
for no apparent reason.

This love is totally free.
It has no motive.
It is as though this pure love
loves itself.

Very naturally, then, you will be inclined
to let your own goodness shine forth"
— Swami Chidvilasananda

Just as you insert a thread
into the eye of a needle
to make it ready to sew,
similarly, you pass your life
through the eye of the heart
so that you may become fit
to serve God with the knowledge of Him"
— Swami Chidvilasananda
